Runner’s World ½ Marathon with Sarah Reinertsen

"With 20+ years in the Orthotics and Prosthetics field, I have had many memorable and rewarding experiences. Recently my wife and I decided it would be fun to run a 1/2 marathon. Being we had never run anywhere near this distance, we were a little apprehensive and trained very diligently. For my wife, the weekend was about the race, but for me it was about meeting one of my idols.

We attended the pasta dinner the night before the run. Sarah Reinertsen was the key-note speaker. Her speech was very moving and inspirational. She informed the audience of her plight as a handicapped child, and being picked last for sports, and many times not being able to play at all. Sarah has not let any obstacles get in her way, and has become the first woman amputee to finish the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii.

I was able to talk with her that evening and also run with her the next day. Sarah not only inspires other disabled people, but she enlightens everyone she meets. Running with Sarah was an awesome and unforgettable experience.

I can't think of a greater reward for a prosthetist than being able to help dramatically improve someone's life!"
